Michael Whalen

Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Whalen has advised or led the successful financing of more than $15 billion in capital for projects in the energy, natural resources and infrastructure sectors in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific.  These have included several award-winning transactions such as: the first project financing (and refinancing) of a major greenfield liquefied natural gas facility in the United States; one of the first project finance transactions in Argentina following its economic crisis; and world-scale process industry facilities in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. He recently advised an infrastructure client on its winning acquisition financing strategy for a major North American container terminal portfolio and the first ever financing of an LNG terminal in the Southern Hemisphere.

Prior to joining SolarReserve, Mr. Whalen established and headed HSBC's project finance team in New York for the Americas. He led his team in advising and advising/lead arranging Project Finance's "Americas Deal of the Year" for two of the last three years. He joined HSBC from Bank of America, where he was co-head of the Energy & Power Finance team for Europe, Middle East and Africa based in London, where Mr. Whalen led the advisory team for a $1.5 billion refinery and petrochemical facility in Oman and a petrochemical facility in Egypt. Prior to that assignment, he was based in Hong Kong where his transactional experience ranged from a restructuring of a recycled newsprint facility in Malaysia to a world-scale integrated petrochemical complex in Indonesia. Before Bank of America, Mr. Whalen was part of Mobil Corporationʼs finance group in Fairfax, Virginia, London and Singapore, principally on project finance transactions in the Middle East, the former Soviet Union and in the Asia Pacific region. Mr. Whalen was awarded an MBA and a BA (Honors) from the University of Texas at Austin.
